Welcome to What Language to Learn! My name is Jeff Spencer and I have been fascinated with learning new languages and embracing different cultures since I was a freshman in college. When you learn a language, you are opening up a tremendous door of opportunity for both business and pleasure. If you are an ambitious business professional, an adventurous vacationer, or just someone who loves to learn about and interact with new cultures, making the decision to learn a language will grant you the ability to experience things that were never before achievable.
The ability to speak multiple languages is among the best qualifications that a young business professional can include on his/her resume. In a global economy, it is now more important than ever to interact with other cultures when conducting large scale business activities. A qualified applicant who is able to speak any of the important international languages: German, Japanese, Arabic, Hebrew, or Chinese, among others, will certainly be in the driver’s seat during his/her job interview. The ability to speak a potential client or supplier’s language could be the difference maker between a successful and detrimental business opportunity. Learning to speak the language will allow for you to build trust with a client who may have reservations about working off-shore or earn the respect of a supplier who may offer a lower price depending on his view of you and your company. The little things in business definitely go a long way. In a world where communication is so widely available, the ability to share ideas in another language could be the sole difference maker in a 6 figure income and unemployment.
Have you ever had the desire to visit the beautiful beaches of Thailand or Brazil? What about hiking across the gorgeous mountains of Germany or snow skiing in Switzerland? Have you ever been interested in witnessing the magnificent art and architecture found in Italy or Spain? Regardless of what your dream home away from home may be, the best way to ensure that you are able to earn the respect of the locals is to be able to communicate in their language. There is nothing that makes a vacation better than having the locals go out of their way to guarantee that your stay in their country is everything you want it to be. Learning the language of another culture prior to visiting is a sign of respect which most people will counter with tremendous hospitality. The ability to communicate with the local citizens could be the difference in eating at touristy restaurants or being invited to an authentic Italian home-cooked meal with homemade wine.
Sometimes a person will want to learn a language simply out of love for another culture. For people who really appreciate an author, it is often better to read their work in its original form. Japanese anime and the movies of Bollywood are more excellent examples of cultural impacts that have given many people the desire to study hard and master a new language. Heck, maybe you just love the way French or Portuguese sounds rolling off your tongue! No matter what the reason may be, a passionate desire to learn a language will give any student confidence to accomplish other life goals and a wonderful feeling of accomplishment by achieving something so unique, the ability to communicate effectively with non-English speakers.
Regardless of what your reasoning may be, learning a language will always move you forward in some facet of your life. Studying hard and dedicating the required amount of time it takes to accomplish this goal will give you a significant amount of confidence causing you to be successful in whatever it is you decide to do in the future.
