You may have had experiences where you have seen people communicating using their hands instead of speaking to one another. That is because they are from the deaf community and have their own way of expressing their thoughts and emotions. They cannot hear or speak so they use hand signs as a form of communication rather than speaking. In the United States and Canada, the deaf community uses American Sign Language (ASL) as their primary means of communication.

In order to learn American Sign Language, your approach must be the same when you are learning other foreign languages like Japanese, Russian, and others. You must be prepared to start at the beginning, learning the alphabet, and develop a vocabulary and practice in order to reach a point where you can comfortably communicate with members of the deaf community. Another important note about ASL is that it does not share any similarity with the British Sign Language (BSL), even though the U.S. and United Kingdom have a common written and spoken language.

ASL is a fully developed language which makes use of manual signs, facial expressions, and various body movements, as well as postures to relay linguistic information. If you are a beginner, it is a must that you first memorize the ASL alphabet since this will help you in spelling out the words. To help you familiarize with these words, it is advisable to have a sign dictionary handy that you can use as reference especially while you are in the process of learning.

It does not mean, though, that you can learn ASL solely out of a book. If you are serious about learning to sign, try to get help from your friends in the deaf community; they can make you avoid making errors and developing incorrect habits that books are not able to correct. I’d recommend taking a formal class in ASL if you cannot find anyone from the deaf community to practice with. There are deaf organizations present in most major cities, as well as colleges and universities, that offer sign classes. Even though there are some online tutorials available, learning from a classroom setting is still the more effective option with this visual language.

Studying ASL opens up opportunities for learners who are hoping to enter professions related to deafness assistance. Those interested in getting a career in community social work and educational services will benefit a lot from this training as well. ASL is one of those languages that can open up opportunities all over the place businesswise because there are many successful, deaf business owners in America. Learning to communicate through signs is a great way to get on the good side of a successful, deaf business owner.

Deaf communities are generally very tight-knit and it takes some effort to earn the trust of their members. With the right attitude and a commitment to learn ASL, you can make a connection with a lot of folks in the deaf community. Good understanding of their language can also help you better understand their sub-culture and be able to socialize with them in a more fun way.
